Aqua

In my opinion, Aqua is one of my most successful works of 2011.

The composition and palette of this painting, and others like it in the series, were inspired by a number of things: most notably light through bare trees in early spring, totems, and the colours of a collection of Indonesian day moths that hang on my studio wall (on pins, poor fellows). Further, the grids that appear in the back ground and foreground are inspired by maps of cities and farms - and the way we mark out domain in general. It is not a little ironic (neither is it unintentional) that the end product ends up resembling a chain link fence - the result of ‘x’ marking one spot after another in the positive, while cancelling the spot out simultaneously.
